About EMDR therapy

Some experiences can feel over, while their impact remains close.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured form of psychotherapy used to work with distressing experiences, memories, and the reactions connected to them.

You may understand what happened and still notice that certain situations bring up fear, tension, shame, vivid memories, or a sense of being pulled back into an earlier moment. EMDR offers one way to approach those experiences with support and at a pace that respects your readiness.

At Stoneglass, EMDR is held within a broader therapeutic relationship rather than treated as a one-size-fits-all technique. Your therapist will take time to understand what brings you in, discuss whether EMDR may fit, and shape the work around your needs, strengths, and sense of safety.

EMDR therapy FAQ

A little more clarity before you begin.

Questions people often have when they are considering EMDR.

What does EMDR stand for?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured form of psychotherapy used to work with distressing experiences, memories, and the emotional or physical reactions connected to them.

Do I have to describe every detail of what happened?

The amount you share can vary, and you do not need to arrive ready to explain everything at once. Your therapist will discuss how EMDR works, what information is helpful, and how to approach the work in a way that respects your comfort, consent, and readiness.

How will I know whether EMDR is right for me?

EMDR is not automatically the right starting point for every person or concern. Your therapist will first learn about what you are experiencing, answer your questions, and consider readiness, goals, supports, and safety with you before deciding how it may fit.

Can EMDR therapy be offered virtually?

Stoneglass currently provides virtual psychotherapy across Ontario, including EMDR when it is considered an appropriate fit. Your therapist will discuss privacy, technology, support, and other practical considerations with you before beginning this work online.

What happens before reprocessing begins?

Early work focuses on understanding what brings you in, explaining the approach, identifying goals, and developing resources that support grounding and steadiness. You can ask questions throughout, and moving forward is a collaborative decision.
